Growing Up With Time
Authored by: Sean

I can almost hear you exclaiming, “Of course one grows up with time!” But pause just a minute and ask yourself if this is true in all cases.

Don’t you know enough people who have kind of retained their childish/child like demeanor even though they are adults, at least technically speaking? Being childish is probably less attractive because they conveniently forget their responsibilities!

But, the one thing about growing up with the passage of time is that you tend to take on more responsibilities and different kinds at that.

As a baby, probably the only responsibility you have is to cry, eat and poop, giving your parents the responsibility of looking after you!

But then comes student life and you realize that time needs to be managed pretty carefully because you have academic deadlines to meet, examinations to take and dates (of the romantic kind) to keep. All of which requires flawless time management.

You probably then get into the corporate world. Where, yet again, time takes on a completely new dimension altogether. Your bosses will demand punctuality. And if you are in an office which believes in card swiping to make your entry and exit, then you better run to make it on time.

But if you have the time, do remember Confucius’s words, “The virtuous man is driven by responsibility, the non-virtuous man is driven by profit”.

Married life! For sure, it can be the time of your life indeed but it brings all the responsibilities that come associated with a loving spouse, kids and various other domestic chores. All of which have to be balanced with an ongoing job as well.

Life indeed comes full circle because it is you now who has to look after your baby who cries, eats and poops.

One thing for sure. The people you meet along the way teach you all about accountability.

Your parents will probably teach you moral values more than any other human beings. And as Anne Frank said, “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.”

Your teachers will tell you that academic deadlines are sacrosanct. Your boss will probably give you the worst shelling ever if you fail to meet a deadline for a project.

Your spouse? Ah well, he or she might understand but will never let you forget the time that you forgot something important.

For sure, having responsibilities does not come in the way of having the time of your life. All you need is to take on life at full tilt and with strength! Because as Chuck Palahniuk, the American writer said, “Find joy in everything you choose to do. Every job, relationship, home… it’s your responsibility to love it, or change it.”
