Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Automatic H77696793

Check out this piece by Hamilton. This brand has a 120 year history and they also claim a long-standing association with aviation. This particular model is a pilot watch – it’s their ‘cross-wind’ series, which many people also refer to as X-Wind. As the name suggests, the watch can be used to calculate headwind, tailwind, drift angles as well as magnetic bearings… which would be a lot more exciting if you are a pilot. For the rest of us, it just makes this a well engineered watch, especially considering that it is fitted with an automatic movement – the Valjoux 7750 with 25 jewels to be precise. The mechanism includes an oscillating rotor that winds the mainspring via the movement of your wrist. Admire the inner working of the movement from the transparent case back.

The case is stainless steel, but finished with a high quality gold plating that is 10 microns. The rose gold look gives the watch a sophisticated air. The diameter is a comfortable 44mm (and approximately 50mm including crowns on the right and left) which makes sense for a watch with so much detailing and such a busy looking face — several sub-dials and rulers. The thickness is about 16mm. So it is definitely a noticeable addition to your wrist, but doesn’t end up looking oversized. The black dial is actually black carbon fiber with rose gold Arabic numerals. The total weight of this watch is 142g. The crystal is a scratch resistant sapphire. The layout of the dial features a day/date window at 9:00 (which is quite different from the regular 3 o’clock positioning that we are used to) and an internal bi-directional rotating bezel – controlled by this crown (located at 4:00). The outer bezel is black and also bi-directional rotating. Equipped with a screw-down crown, the X-Wind has a depth rating of 100m.

The strap is really a defining feature of this watch. It’s handcrafted in Germany and is black leather with a carbon fiber texture that matches the dial. The “H” tang buckle is an especially nice touch.

The hands and hour markers are luminous, but it could have been much better. The hour markers are tiny dots. Once your eyes get used to the dark you can read the hour perfectly, but until then you really can’t tell. But then if they made the numerals luminous, they would lose the rose gold look. I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

My wife and son bought me a lmoinux water resistant watch for christmas one year.It was a fairly expensive watch and I was happy with it for two years. At that time I was stepping aboard my boat when the pin holding the band fell out. I caught the watch just before it hit the salt water where it would have been lost forever. It might as well have been. I replaced the pin and it happened again. I took the watch to the jewelry store and was told that the watch could not be fixed as the stainless pins had worn out the rubber where the ends of the pins seat. The name Navy Seals suggests that this is one tough watch which it is not. Stainless pins must have a metal seat.
