In darkness there is light
Authored by: Sean

There are plenty of philosophical references to light and the many things it symbolizes. But when it comes to technology, and specifically wristwatch technology, light has something more tangible to offer! Different watch brands use illumination technology in many different ways. Some of them have become almost synonymous with luminescence and perhaps one brand that leads the way in this space is Luminox. There are plenty of other watch brands as well that make it more comfortable to see time in poor light or even zero light conditions. Let’s take a look at 3 different brands, shall we.

So, let us start with Luminox. This watch brand is all about ‘always visible’ or at a glance visibility. Your Luminox watch will have 24 x 7 visibility, regardless of the luminosity of your surroundings. What is more interesting is the fact that the technology used by Luminox will last 25 years. You do not need to push a button and you do not a watch which has been painted with luminescent hues or even a watch that needs to be charged by another light source in order to be visible.Take a look at Dave showing you the illumination on various parts of the Luminox Recon Navy SPC 8831.

Dave reviews the Luminox Steel Colormark 7253 and shows you how it looks under low light. This technology, used by Luminox is all about borosilicate glass capsules placed in areas such as the numbers or markers, hands and in some cases the bezel of the watch. These tiny glass capsules are put together by hand in every Luminox watch. The capsules are filled with radioactive tritium which basically goes through a beta decay. This beta decay process causes the phosphor compound lining each glass tube to emit a soft and steady luminescence to the Luminox watch.

Michael Kors watches here are made from some extraordinarily superb colors and materials and bring together gold, rose gold and so on. The end result is a watch that you would prefer as a dress watch. However, Michael Kors watches boast of some pretty decent luminescence and you can check one out in Dave’s review of the Michael Kors MK5410. If you want a luminescent Michael Kors with a more black-and-white look, you can also check out the Michael Kors MK5080.

Casio very recently announced a rather colorful portfolio based on its Neon Illuminator technology. This technology works by using a black light LED which emits an invisible light that results in glow of different colors because of the special coating. Casio also has some immensely popular watches from the G Shock series which have plenty of features to offer and perhaps the most interesting one is the backlight display on the Casio G Shock GA 100 1A4 and the super bright display on the Casio G Shock DW6900CB-4. Take a look at the video reviews done by Dave and you will know why these watches are popular for the illumination technology.

Luminescence and reliable illumination technology is one of the most important features that people look for in a watch. Granted, some brands are more equal than others when it comes to this particular field! A lot would really depend on how you intend to use the watch.
