Music – perhaps the only true unifying force

There are so many kinds of music. So many words for music as well. So whether you like Opera, jazz, Ragtime, hard rock, a cappella or good old country music, you know that you can find a kindred spirit almost in any part of the world. Is not it strange how all of us click our fingers, tap our feet or just sway our bodies to music, even if we do not know its language?

I do believe that music consists of sounds, silences and even different kinds of instruments. To me, there is music in my pet’s breathing. There is also music in my favorite country singer’s guitar. The concept of time and timeliness is something that is kind of intricately linked to music. After all, we find rhythm in a particular piece of music.

It is also easier to sing along to music that is kind of predictable. In a grand setting such as an Orchestra, every instrument has to be sounded/played at the exact right time. Otherwise, the result is indeed cacophony.

Speaking of time and music, according to research from Dale Purves who is a professor at Duke University, periodically played sounds end up being more interesting to human beings. If a sound, song or a piece of music is repeated constantly, then it comes to be associated with positive things. Obviously, you have to like all these sounds and music!

Perhaps you like it so much that you cannot get rid of it. After all, the term earworm was invented because a song or a song or even a little ditty would simply never leave your brain. You could think of it or hum it even at most inappropriate times. Music is not limited to performers onstage or bands alone. There is music in movies, television shows, advertisements and so on.

Who can ever forget the iconic theme song of the movie Jaws? Every time, and it really was a question of timing, that the 2 notes that went into the making of this theme crept into the screen, you knew that The Shark was just around the corner. Music can also be linked to survival and life itself. Weddings, births, deaths and various festivals all over the world are linked; inexorably so; to music. Many people turn to music to get through painful times in their lives.

There are particular songs that are played during every event. And even the first few notes of “happy birthday to you” will get you to start dreaming about cake! I also know a lot of people who have got through difficult times in their lives because they listened to music and musicians as diverse as Eminem, Beethoven and Kenny Rogers. Music is also all about formulae of various kinds. There are scales, timings for each instrument, pitches, tunes and so on. If you sing for the love of music, then you may probably not pay much heed to the technical perfection of what you are doing!

There is this friend of mine who cannot hold a tune even if you gave it in his hand and yet we get him to sing every single time that we meet. The sheer joy with which he belts out songs gets all of us to have a great time! Of course there are many different kinds of music. Of course, we all get through good times and bad times because of our inherent love of the beauty of music. As long as you can discover all the joys of the world because you have a sense of melody and rhythm around you, life is a song indeed!
