The mother of all professions – teaching
Authored by: Sean

It is an undeniable truth that teaching and learning are 2 sides of the same coin. It is also an inviolable fact that teaching is the foundation for every profession in the world! Yet another fact to add to this trifecta of truths is the fact that teaching can happen anywhere – in classrooms, among friends, within the family and so on. Perhaps the very first teacher most of us have is our Mom! Formal schooling follows and then we branch off into streams of education all over the world and learn and get taught and in turn, become teachers as well.

Teachers are champions. As Rita Pierson states, so very eloquently, in her TED talk – every kid needs a champion. A good teacher can impart education but a great teacher will impart inspiration, seemingly without even trying. It may not always be a lovable job but it is a job with the potential to change lives. All of us have had teachers like this – champions at what they do and effortless in their ability to get us to think and live better!

Life changing, life enhancing and making your days count – imagine going through this change process simply because you had a magnificent teacher. Whether it is in your school or your life, an individual who is a force of nature can get you to change the direction in which you are heading and go towards something that is beyond compare. Take a look at how Christopher Emdin talks about music, education, energy, pedagogy and other things interesting.

For those of us who take education for granted, the story of Malala is almost unbelievable. Imagine being shot in the head at a tender 11-12 years of age simply because you wanted to go to school. Bullets and an oppressive regime have not kept her away from changing the lives of a million little girls around the world. Perhaps the best part of her life is the role of her father – Ziauddin Yousafzai – as an educator. Giving her freedom to learn and now, teach – what a powerful tale this is.

It is intriguing that we recall our teachers with love only after a passage of time – maybe a few years. But then there is something that we do or count as our strength and chances are that it is because our teacher got us thinking about it! So, whether it is your superb command over English, thanks to that literature professor you had, or your penchant for creative conceptualization because your mother exhorted you to think out of the box – know that you have indeed been a good pupil to the best of teachers in your life.
