What’s In A Name? Sometimes, Interesting Stories!
Authored by: Monica

Watch brands, at least the vast majority, will have multiple types or series of timepieces to offer. Some of these collections have very interesting names while others follow ‘norms’ and call themselves ‘Classic’, ‘Retro’, ‘Vintage’, ‘Quartz’, ‘Sports’, ‘Chrono’ and so on. The brand name is important when it comes to watches because you associate certain features and levels of performance with every single brand out there. And when you delve into the names of some series, life gets interesting!

Take Ancher from Skagen for instance. Skagen Ancher watches are known best for their beautifully minimal design lines. But isn’t it interesting to know that Anna Ancher debuted as a painter in 1880 and was born and raised in Skagen, Denmark? Skagen, the brand is all about Danish designs and you can see the clean lines in the Skagen Women’s Ancher SKW2260.

The old-fashioned canteen bottles evoke images of the Wild West and rugged military men on the battlefront. One of the features of this bottle was the connector between the stopper and the bottle. That little feature has gone a long way in producing the magnificent looking Canteen series from TW Steel. One of them is the TW Steel Canteen CB224. Look at its characteristic crown assembly.

Skylar is a word derived from Schuyler which means ‘scholar’ and is a Dutch word. The word itself is musical – simply say the word ‘Skylar’ and you will know what I mean. So when you put on the Michael Kors Women’s Skylar MK5866, you will go beyond having an academic interest in gorgeous accessories!

Going back in time takes on a different dimension with the Kr3w Redrum series. Getting the ‘E’ to face backwards in the brand name Kr3w is such a lovely touch. So now, apply the same viewpoint to Redrum and you get ‘murder’ spelt backwards! The touch of blood is apparent in the Kr3W Men’s Redrum K1342B.

Plenty of watch brands celebrate a great alliance with racing brands. Now you may not expect an exclusive and luxurious brand such as Chopard to have such an association right? But it does and it takes the form of Chopard G.P.M.H 168569-9001. The letters GPMH stand for Grand Prix de Monaco Historique.

DKNY celebrates the spirit of New York in quite a few ways. The ‘NY’ in the brand name of course and also in its very sleek DKNY Women’s Beekman NY2229. Incidentally, Wilhelmus Beekman, a Dutch immigrant, went on to become Mayor of New York City in 1682. There are streets, a tower and a neighborhood that celebrates this name!

So the next time you pick up a watch from DiscountShop.com and the timepiece has an interesting name, it probably has some influence or connection with a really interesting story too.
